Description

What is Coalbed Methane (CBM) and Why Use It

  • Definition & Fuel Source: Coalbed Methane (CBM) is methane gas naturally adsorbed within coal seams; when extracted, it becomes a valuable clean-burning gas resource.

  • Why CBM for Power Generation: Compared with coal combustion, using CBM for power reduces harmful emissions and converts knee-jerk “waste methane” into useful electricity and heat.

  • Environmental and Safety Benefit: Capturing CBM helps lower methane release (a potent greenhouse gas) from coal mines, improving safety and reducing greenhouse impact.

Main technical features:

Turbocharging and shunt Intake technology:

Gas and air will be isolated to eliminate the generation of mixed gas before entering the cylinder with no contact. While the exhaust energy of the generator set is used to turbocharge the gas and air respectively, which realizes the improvement of intake and the synchronous improvement of operation power and volume power and also ensures safety operation.

It has been running safely and steadily for more than 30000 hours since 2018. The measured electric efficiency is more than 40%, that is, one cubic meter of exhaust gas generates one kilowatt-hour of electricity. There is no carbon monoxide leakage, no backfire and flash explosion, and the genset runs smoothly. Self consumption rate is less than 2%. The operation control of the genset is automatically adjusted with the change of gas.

Key Advantages of the 800 kW Silent-Type CBM Gas Generator

  • Silent & Low-Noise Operation — The silent-type enclosure and optimized engine design reduce vibration and mechanical noise, making the unit suitable for noise-sensitive environments (e.g. near residential or commercial zones).

  • Clean Combustion & Lower Emissions — As with conventional gas generators, CBM combustion produces fewer pollutants (NOₓ, SO₂, particulate matter) compared to diesel or coal-fired alternatives.

  • Good Fuel Utilization & Efficiency — Well-designed CBM generator sets can maintain high running hours annually and adapt to CBM’s lower calorific value by using gas-specific preprocessing modules (compression, dehydration, stabilization).

  • Flexible & Stable Power Supply — The 800 kW rating is ideal for medium-to-large industrial or mining sites, remote facilities, or any application needing stable off-grid power.

  • Environmentally Responsible Energy Use — Using CBM helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transforms otherwise wasted methane into useful energy, supporting sustainability goals.

Typical Applications

  • Mining operations using methane from coal seams — converting waste CBM into electricity for on-site use.

  • Industrial and manufacturing plants requiring stable, low-noise power.

  • Remote or off-grid locations lacking stable grid connection, where CBM supply is available.

  • Waste-to-energy or coal-mine-gas utilization projects aiming to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

  • Combined Heat and Power (CHP) or energy recovery systems, when equipped with heat-recovery modules.

Technical & Operational Highlights

  • Fuel Compatibility: Designed for coalbed methane gas — includes modules to handle typical CBM gas features (lower calorific value, pressure fluctuations, water content).

  • Continuous Operation Capability: Many CBM gensets support long annual runtime (e.g. > 8000 hours), with high load-factor stability and low maintenance requirements.

  • Robust Design & Reliability: Engine and control systems are optimized for gas operation — with corrosion-resistant components, gas-specific sealing, stable ignition systems, and safety features for gas fuel.

  • Low Frequency Noise & Vibration: Gas engines typically have smoother combustion and fewer mechanical shocks compared to diesel, resulting in lower vibration and noise — this generator’s silent-type design further suppresses operational noise.

Environmental & Cost Benefits

  • Emission Reduction: Compared to coal-fired or diesel-powered generators, CBM gas generators produce significantly fewer NOₓ, SO₂, and particulate emissions, improving air quality and easing compliance with environmental regulations.

  • Methane Mitigation: By capturing and burning methane from coal seams (which otherwise would be vented), the system mitigates a potent greenhouse gas and converts it to CO₂ — reducing the overall greenhouse effect footprint.

  • Stable Fuel Cost & Local Resource Use: CBM can be sourced locally around coal mining sites, reducing fuel transport cost and dependence on imported fuels or volatile diesel markets.

  • Operational Savings: Continuous operation, fewer pollutants, and simpler maintenance lead to lower lifetime operational costs compared to diesel/coal-fired systems.
