Operation & Maintenance of Natural Gas Gensets in High Wind-Sand Environments: A Qinghai Case Study

Operation and Maintenance of Units in High Wind-Sand Environments of the Qinghai Plateau
Nov 13, 2025

EN Energy engineers were deployed to the project site in the Qinghai Plateau to perform critical maintenance on natural gas generator sets operating under extreme conditions, characterized by heavy wind-sand and significant temperature fluctuations.

Equipment Protection & Design

The units utilize a rainproof containerized structure, which serves as a robust shield to minimize the impact of airborne sand and dust on three core areas:

  • Air Intake System: Preventing abrasive particles from entering the combustion chamber.

  • Cooling System: Ensuring heat dissipation remains efficient by preventing radiator clogging.

  • Electronic Control System: Protecting sensitive components from dust accumulation and static interference.

Key Maintenance Activities

During the inspection, the engineers focused on several high-priority tasks:

  • Filtration System Maintenance: Thoroughly cleaned the multi-stage protective filtration systems to ensure optimal airflow.

  • Turbocharger Inspection: Evaluated the operational status of the turbochargers, ensuring they remain reliable under the low-pressure conditions of high altitude.

  • Performance Testing: Conducted power response tests specifically under wind-sand conditions to verify the units' transient load capabilities and stability.

Conclusion and Status

The inspection confirmed that the units are in normal operating condition. No major overhauls were required; the team concluded the visit by performing necessary consumable replacements (such as filters and seals) to ensure continued peak performance.
